The Metropolitan Rail Corporation, otherwise known as Metra, is the commuter rail division of the Regional Transportation Authority for the Chicago metropolitan area. Metra spans six counties with 1100 miles of track, and 82.7 million passenger rides a year.
Metra’s predominant challenge was unifying and consolidating their operations. Metra operated 23 different systems across different platforms that were maintained and monitored by different people. The disjointed operations left them susceptible to brain drain as individuals would leave the company, as well as inconsistencies in reporting and monitoring due to software variances and manual merging of information from the various systems.
SOLUTION + BENEFITS
Metra selected Oracle Retail Point-of-Service solutions to consolidate their operations. With SkillNet as their integration partner, Metra implemented ORPOS into their five downtown Chicago stations, as well as their eighty-two different outlying stations. With the successful implementation of ORPOS, Metra now has one inventory system in place that allows data to feed into a foundation at the corporate offices every thirty seconds.
As a result of the ORPOS implementation, Metra benefited from an enhanced and more engaged customer experience by significantly improving ticket sale efficiency at station desks. It also resulted in faster and more accurate data collection and accounting.
